Succession Planning: Ensuring Continuity for Your Organization

Whether you call it succession or transition planning, it is critically important for nonprofit organizations. Having a sound plan in place that is reviewed annually by the staff and Board assures a seamless transition of the senior staff/CEO and also determines that the operations of the organization are not only efficient, but also focused on appropriate goals. In this session we will explore how far your organization has progressed on this topic and where it would like to go.

Employment Agreements — A Smart Business Decision

A well thought out employment agreement is in the best interests of the organization and the individual serving as the Executive Director. While it is not always easy to discuss, it is important for all involved. Engage in a discussion led by an executive search consultant who has helped develop these for numerous associations. Judy Walker Discusses Succession Planning

February 10, 2011 CEO Roundtanle - South Carolina Society of Association Executives - Columbia, SC

Though common in the corporate world, succession or transition planning in nonprofit organizations is still fairly rare, yet it's an important process for assuring a seamless transition of senior staff and also determining that the operations of the organization are not only efficient, but also focused on appropriate goals. While succession planning is often begun in anticipation of a major leadership change, these two events need not be linked. Rather, today, succession planning is considered a basic management tool and indeed, many Chief Staff Executives are assessed partially on how well they have developed and implemented a succession plan for their organization, regardless of where they are in their personal cycle of employment with the organization. In other words, succession planning should be proactive, rather than initiated at the loss of a CEO.

Judy will discuss how to formulate a plan; when to involve board and staff; what needs to be part of the plan, and how to manage a departure, if you are a CEO thinking of making a move.

Judith Walker is a senior consultant at Vetted Solutions, a boutique executive search firm specializing in association and nonprofit recruiting and consulting. She has more than 30 years experience in the management of non-profit organizations, both professional groups and trade associations. Judy was employed for almost 20 years by the SmithBucklin Corporation, serving as the head of their Communications Division, managing large associations (budgets from $1-10MM), and finally serving as Executive Vice President, Healthcare Business Unit. In the latter role, Judy was responsible for the profitability of the healthcare business unit and the hiring and oversight of all employees who held the position of Executive Director or Executive Vice President of health-related organizations.

Explore A Career in the Expansive World of Associations

December 8, 2010 - Washington, D.C.

Talented professionals at all levels are finding themselves between jobs due to the current environment and the shift on Capitol Hill. ASAE CareerHQ.org is pleased to invite you to learn more about career opportunities in the association world-and how your career can thrive in this sector.

Professional societies represent a diverse array of opportunities in areas such as health care, law, and finance. These societies provide individual members with the most up-to-date information about their profession while enabling them to share common problems and solutions with their peers. Trade associations represent industries and provide services to member organizations. Among these services are delivering information about actions on Capitol Hill that may affect their business, research and statistics on trends in the industry, and information on new products.

The market for association jobs is moving, and candidates must present themselves in the best manner possible in order to land their next opportunity. Join us for this complimentary program with panelists Lisa M. Maatz, director of public policy and government relations, American Association of University Women, Christopher P. Krese, senior vice president, marketing, communications and media relations, National Association of Chain Drug Stores, James J. Zaniello, president, Vetted Solutions, and Paul A. Belford, principal, JDG Associates Limited, as they share concrete examples on how your skills translate to the association world.

Making A Switch to Non-Profits

December 2, 2010 - Washington, D.C.

If you’re a senior marketing exec and considering other opportunities in the DC area, where should you focus? There are thousands of not-for-profit organizations—associations, charitable causes, advocacy groups, education and cultural institutions, NGOs, etc. If your experience has been in the for-profit corporate world, can you, should you try to cross over to the non-profit world. If so, how and where?

MENG’s presentation has two highly knowledgeable experts on this topic, Jim Zaniello, president and founder of Vetted Solutions, a recruiting firm specializing in nonprofits, and Denise Aranoff-Brown, former CMO at the National Aquarium and formerly a senior marketing executive at Chevy Chase Bank and American Express, with a Wharton MBA.

Jim and Denise will address issues of whether corporate marketers can switch to non-profits, and if so:

• What skills/benefits to emphasize
• What kinds of non-profit organizations are more viable to target
• What are the obstacles, risks and limitations to consider
• How do you organize your search; resources to consider
• How do you present your resume?

Are You Prepared for the Unexpected?

Although we don’t plan on it, sometimes the unexpected occurs — the CEO is in a disabling accident and unable to return to the office, or the board and the executive director “agree to disagree” and the organization finds itself suddenly without a staff leader. What happens next? What should you have in place in your office to make sure that if you are suddenly out of the picture, your office will continue to run effectively? Although this session is aimed specifically at ACEC state executive directors, it will be applicable to others who serve on non-profit boards or manage small-to-medium sized companies.

Presenters: James J. Zaniello, President, Vetted Solutions, Washington, DC; Dan Mobley, Executive Director, ACEC-LA; Dawn Tibbetts, Executive Director, ACEC-NM.
