National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

Executive Director

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit professional membership association dedicated to improving mathematics teaching and learning from PreK–12, is looking for its new Executive Director. Founded in 1920, NCTM has long served as a leading voice in mathematics education and today remains the largest nonprofit professional association for mathematics educators, with more than 20,000 members and more than 200 affiliates throughout the United States and Canada.

NCTM’s next Executive Director will join an organization with a strong history, a widely respected brand, and a mission that remains highly relevant to educators and students, while being asked to sharpen strategic direction, strengthen organizational effectiveness, and build alignment across the Board, staff, affiliates, and members in a changing mathematics education environment.

As chief steward of the mission and a central liaison across constituent groups, the Executive Director will help NCTM articulate a clear strategic direction; strengthen its financial position and reserves; build relationships and trust among the Board, staff, affiliates, and members; and, in partnership with the Board and staff, lead thoughtful, mission-aligned organizational change.

The Executive Director serves as the chief staff officer of NCTM and works in close partnership with the President and Board of Directors to advance the organization’s mission, translate policy into practice, and lead day-to-day operations. The role requires an executive who can balance governance partnership, operational leadership, financial stewardship, member and affiliate engagement, and external relationship-building in a complex volunteer-driven environment.

NCTM is headquartered in Reston, Virginia, operates with an annual budget of approximately $11 million, and employs 30 full-time staff members. Currently, the Executive Director has nine direct reports. While NCTM currently operates primarily remotely and offers flexibility for remote work, the expectation is that the incoming Executive Director will reside in the greater Washington, DC–Maryland–Virginia (DMV) region. The Executive Director will be expected to attend in-person meetings, staff convenings, Board activities, conferences, and other organizational events at the association’s offices and throughout the DMV.
