President & CEO
The Business + Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) seeks a dynamic, business-oriented President & CEO to lead the organization’s strategic direction, advance industry awareness, drive growth, and strengthen member value. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the President & CEO will implement programs and initiatives in support of BIFMA’s organizational strategies while providing day-to-day leadership to its eight-member staff team and overseeing the organization’s operations. The successful leader will serve as BIFMA’s chief spokesperson, cultivate relationships with policymakers and industry partners, advance standards adoption, identify new strategic opportunities and revenue streams, and work closely with the Board to promote organizational growth, stability, and member value.
BIFMA is the leading nonprofit furniture trade association in North America, with members from around the world. Since 1973, BIFMA has served as the voice of the commercial furniture industry and as a recognized source for developing and managing furniture standards addressing safety, ergonomics, health, sustainability, and performance. The association also supports the industry through market data, thought leadership, product registries, sustainability certification, statistics reporting, government relations, industry promotion, education, networking, and trade development programs. BIFMA has an operating budget of approximately $2.2 million and is headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
This person will bring progressively responsible executive leadership experience in a dynamic trade association, nonprofit, business or institutional furniture company, or a commercial-sector organization in architecture, interior design, or real estate. Experience in the built environment, manufacturing, or B2B is preferred. The successful candidate will have strong experience in operations, revenue generation, differentiated value propositions, membership or customer growth, marketing, brand positioning, partnerships, sales, and sponsorship. Exceptional communication, consensus-building, and executive presence are essential, as is the ability to work effectively with an elected Board, volunteer leaders, committees, and globally distributed constituents. A master’s degree in business or a bachelor’s degree with an equivalent combination of education and executive experience is required; an advanced degree and CAE credential are valued. The position is based at BIFMA’s headquarters in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with the CEO expected to maintain a significant regular presence in the office.
